INTRODUCTION
The Divisional Forest Office (DFO), Middle Andaman is located at Rangat, around 170 km away from Port Blair.A Saw Mill at Betapur, Automobile Workshop at Rangat Bay, Boat Repair & Maintenance Yard at Long Island, Divisional Store Godown at Rangat, five territorial Ranges viz. Betapur, Rangat, Bakultala, Bajalungta and Long Island and a functional Range viz. AFEVS created exclusively for dealing with the encroachment & forest protection matters, constitutes the division. Middle Andaman Forest Division is one of the biggest territorial Forest Division of the Department of Environment & Forests, Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Geographical area & Density of forest in Middle Andaman Division
(i) Total Geographical Area - 96500 Ha.(100%)
(ii) Total Non-Forest Area - 10788 Ha.(11.18%)
(iii) Total Forest Area - 85712 Ha.(88.82%)
(iv) Reserved Forest Status Area (inclusive of mangrove area)
(a) Reserved Forest - 52428.5 Ha.
(b) Tribal Reserve - 31726.5 Ha.
(c) Wildlife Sanctuary - 1466 Ha. (land area) (+936 Ha. overlapping on tribal reserve)
(d) National Parks - 91 Ha. (land area)
(v) Mangrove Forest Area - 13533 Ha.

HISTORY
        The DFO has undergone certain changes from its original territorial boundary due to carving out of a new Division. The new boundaries of Middle Andaman Forest Division as well as other forest divisions were finally fixed vide No.F16(G-1)/18/Vol-II/971 dated 31-10-2002 (Annexure-I).It is situated between the latitudes 12 15' and 12 50' North and longitudes 92 40' and 93 50' East.
        The northern boundary starts from Cape Strachen in th East, follows the watershed & ends at Rocky point off pilot Bay in the west. The Southern boundary is Homfray Strait, Elphinstne hatbour, Mills Passage and Andaman Sea, the western boundary is the Bay Of Bengal & Eastern boundary is the Andaman Sea.
      The middle Andaman Forest Division lies in the Revenue and Administrative District of Andamans, which has its head quarters at port Blair. The Principal Administrative centre within the Divisional boundary is Rangat, the head quarters of Rangat tehsil. The Administrative headquarter of the Forest Division has also been shifted to rangat From long Island during 1989-90.
