Important activities and achievements of Sports Department during 2014-15:
The Department has organized Triathlon for Men on 26th April, 2014. The event started from Ross Island and finished at Netaji Stadium. Altogether, 96 Triathletes participated in this event and 72 were successfully completed the event. Cash award of Rs.30,000/-, 25,000/- and 15,000/- has given to the triathletes who secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. To encourage the island sportspersons Cash award of Rs.15,000/-, 12,000/- & 8,000/- was given to those sportsperson who secured 1st, 2nd & 3rd position among the island sportsperson category. Cash award Rs.1000/- and certificates were also given to the Triathletes who successfully complete the event. On this occasion the department also organized Tug-of-War and Spot painting.
A&N State Badminton Association in association with Department of Sports organized State Badminton Tournament from 26th – 29th April, 2014 at Multipurpose Indoor Sports Hall, Port Blair. About 50 participants in various categories participated.
Hon’ble LG has laid foundation stone for construction of Multipurpose Indoor Sports Hall at Kanyapuram on 18/06/2014.
The department has organized 15 days coaching camp at Car Nicobar from 4th June to 19th June, 2014 for different age group in various disciplines like Badminton, Volleyball, Table Tennis and Cycling. Altogether, 31 boys & girls participated in various disciplines.
Two months coaching camp for boys and girls in Tennis was organized at the newly renovated synthetic Tennis Court at Netaji Stadium Sports Complex, Port Blair from 15/04/2014 to 14/06/2014. Altogether, 21 students of different age categories attended the camp.

Two days Beach Volleyball match for Men & Women organized by the Department of Sports in association with A&N State Sports Council held on 19th & 20th July, 2014 at Carbyn’s Cove. Altogether, 21 Men and 06 Women teams are participated.
The Sports Department in association with A&N State Sports Council organized Road Cycle race on 27/07/2014 for Men & Women and Boys & Girls under 16 Yrs to promote cycling as one of the popular discipline in these islands. The distance of the race was 10 Kms for men, 08 Kms for women and 05 Kms for Boys & Girls. Altogether, 70 cyclists participated in different categories.
The ‘National Sports Day’ was organized by this department on 29th August, 2014. To mark the occasion a number of sports activities were organized from 24th – 29th August, 2013. During the occasion, Badminton, Table Tennis & Cycling Competition in various categories was conducted. The Valedictory function was organized on 29th August, 2014 at Tagore Auditorium, in which three veteran sportspersons were felicitated. They included S/Shri Jageshwar Singh, Vijay Moorthy and Smt.Sangeeta Devi.
The Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan in collaboration with Department of Sports and Youth Affairs has organized National Integration Camp from 17th to 22nd August, 2014 at Netaji Stadium Sports Complex. Around 250 delegates from different State / UT including Andaman and Nicobar Islands were attended this camp. Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands was the Chief Guest on the opening ceremony on 17th August, 2014 and Dr.Prabhakaran, Director General, NYKS, New Delhi was the Chief Guest on the closing ceremony, which was held on 22nd August, 2014 at Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Auditorium, Port Blair.
The Islands sportspersons Ms.Regina Kiro and Ms.Deborah from A&N Police selected for Kayaking and Cycling discipline respectively and participated in the 17th Asian Games held at Inchon, South Korea from 19th September to 2nd October, 2014.
The Department of Sports has extended its support in conduct of “Run for Unity” organized by the Administration as a part of celebrating ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ on 31/10/2014 on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The run was flagged off by the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration in presence of the Hon’ble Member of Parliament, A&N Islands.
Special cleanliness drive in the office premises and the other sports infrastructures associated with the department around various islands honestly and actively. Swachhata Shapath was undertaken wherein all the staffs had administered the pledge to dedicate 100 hours every year towards Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Organization of RSC Cup Football Tournament held at Mini Stadium, Wimberlygunj from 6th September to 5th October, 2014. Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands was the Chief Guest on the final match on 5th October, 2014.
The Basketball team for men of A&N Administration participated in the All India Civil Service Basketball Tournament held at New Delhi from 10th to 14th November, 2014.
Island Rowing team participated in the 35th Junior National Rowing Championship held at Lucknow from 10th to 16th November, 2014.
A 10 Km Open Cross Country Race for Men & Women was organized. The Chief Secretary Shri Anand Prakash flagged off the race from Netaji Stadium to Carbyn’s Cove and back. The object of the race was to generate awareness about cleanliness in public places under Swachch Bharat Abhiyan. Altogether, 220 athletes from various schools, colleges & departments participated in the race.
The Department of Sports, Nicobars District Administration and Education Department jointly organized the XXI Vice President of India Cup Soccer Championship from 13 to 24th November, 2014. The final match played between Carnic-A and Carnic-B. Altogether 17 teams participated from various zone.
The Island ace cyclist Ms.Deborah participated in Track Asia Cup Cycling Championship held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi from 21-23 November, 2014. She won four gold medals in women’s elite keirin and sprint finals. Out of 5 gold won by India, 4 won by Ms.Deborah, the Island Cyclist.
The A&N State Sports Council has been reconstituted in consultation with all stakeholders including members of the Advisory Council. Chief Secretary, A&N Administration elected as President, DGP A&N Police as Vice President. Other office bearers include Secretary (Sports) as Genl. Secretary, Director (Sports) as Joint Secretary and Accounts Officer (Sports) as Treasurer (SSC). Its official members are CS, DGP, Secretary (Law), Secretary (Sports), Secretary (Fin.), CE (APWD) and Director (Sports) while non official members of SSC include President of BJP, INC, and NCP, and Shri Herbertsen and Ms.Regina Kiro will represent the sportsperson of the Islands. Chairman of all 09 RSCs are the ex-officio members of the Council.
The A&N Island Cycling team participated in the 19th National Senior, Junior and Sub-Junior Road Cycling Championship held at Karnataka from 26th – 29th December, 2014.
The Department of Sports has initiated drive for beautification and cleanliness of sports facilities available in and around Netaji Stadium Sports Complex. As a part of Swatch Bharat Abhiyan planted many trees in area available in the sports complex.
The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs has organized National Youth Day on 12/01/2015. A youth rally involving 750 youths from JNRM, TGCE, DBRAIT, NYK, SAI, schools of Dte. of Education and youths of RK Mission, Port Blair was organized. An elocution competition among the students of senior secondary level and college on the topic ‘Relevance of Ideas of Swami Vivekananda in contemporary world’ was also organized. The main function was organized at 10.30 am at the statue of Swami Vivekananda in the premises of JNRM, Port Blair. Hon’ble LG, Hon’ble MP and other senior officials paid floral tribute to Swami Vivekananda Ji.
The Department actively participated in Republic Day function on 26th January, 2015 and beating retreat on 29th January, 2015.
The Island team participated in the 35th National Games 2015 held at Kerala from 31st January to 14th February, 2015 in Cycling, Kayaking & Canoeing and Rowing disciplines. The Cycling team won 01 Gold and 02 Silver medals. Ms. Deborah has won gold medal in 500 mtr elite women time trial cycling competition with National Games record in 37.68 seconds.
The Kayaking & Canoeing team won 05 Gold medals, 01 Silver and 03 Bronze medals in the National Games 2015. The performance of Regina Kiro is particularly commendable as she is among one of the most valuable athletes in the 35th National Games who won 05 gold medals in individual and team events.
Ms. Reena Kumari won Silver medal in 500 Mtr Single Scull Rowing events. Altogether, the Island team won 06 Gold, 04 Silver and 03 Bronze medal in the 35th National Games 2015.
The MMT Andaman Marathon 2015 was organized on 01/02/2015 by Andaman Chamber of commerce and Industry in association with Department of Sports and Youth Affairs. Hon’ble Lt. Governor flagged off the race from National Memorial Cellular Jail and give away the prizes to the winner at Netaji Stadium. He lauded the effort put up by the organizer for success of the mega event. The Kenyan runners bagged all the first three places in the Half Marathon in men event, whereas Ms. Birshi Bai from the Island stood third in women category of Half Marathon.
The Island Cycling team participated in the National Track Cycling Championship held at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala from 17th – 22nd February, 2015. Ms. Deborah has won 03 gold medal and surpassed all previous records and has earned the Best Elite Women Individual Cycling Champion Award. 02 Silver medal won by Master and 01 Silver medal won by the team of Ms.Deborah & Ms.Martha. While, 01 Bronze medal secured by Master Ankit Bilong in the 500 mtrs time trial.
The Island Kayaking & Canoeing team participated in the 25th National Kayaking & Canoeing Championship held at Raipur, Chattisgarh from 19th to 23rd February, 2015. The team has won 04 Gold, 02 Silver and 04 Bronze medal in the championship.
The Department of Sports has conducted Two days Open Beach Volleyball for Men and Women on 21st & 22nd Feb. 2015 at Carbyn’s Cove Beach. Altogether 66 teams participated in the tournament.
The Island Badminton team participated in the All India Civil Service Badminton Tournament held at Chennai from 10th – 15th February, 2015.
